Prof. Scholastica Wompakeah Azuah began her academic career at the Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School where she taught at the Home Economics Department and rose through the ranks to Principal Superintendent
at the Ghana Education Service (GES). After obtaining a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Education, Winneba, she taught at the Obuasi JHS Complex and Takoradi International Company Model JHS,
Aboadze. She decided in April 2006 to move to the Department of Fashion Design and Technology, Takoradi Technical University, then Takoradi Polytechnic as an instructor.
By dint of hard work, she attained the lectureship rank in June 2009, and progressively rose to become an Associate Professor in May 2022. She served as Head of Department at Takoradi Technical University for four consecutive terms (2013-2016, 2019- 2023). She contributed to the betterment of her Faculty and University in various capacities and at board and committee levels. In October 2013 (2013/2014 academic year), she was engaged as a part time tutor at the University of Cape Coast Distance Learning where she lectured Clothing and Textiles and Management in Living courses. In 2023, she was appointed Principal of St. Teresa’s College of Education, Hohoe.
Prof. Mrs. Azuah served on Academic, Appointment and Promotion Boards and Ad Hoc committees where she contributed to the drafting of policies for the Technical University. She was a member of the Internal Generation Fund and ICT Boards at Takoradi Technical University (2013-2016). She also contributed to the development of various curricula which include Master of Technology, (M. Tech.) in Textiles & Design and, Bachelor of Technology, (B. Tech), in Fashion Design and Technology studies at the Faculty of Applied Arts.
Regarding Prof. Azuah’s academic achievements, she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy, PhD in African Art and Culture, Aesthetics option from the Department of Educational Innovations in Science and Technology, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in February 2021. In 2009 and 2011 she obtained two degrees, respectively Master of Education, MEd in Educational Administration and Master of Philosophy, MPhil in Education (Home Economics) both from the University of Cape Coast (UCC). Prof. Azuah also holds a Bachelor of Education B.Ed degree from the University of Education Winneba, Kumasi Campus, July 2005, and a Certificate in Education from UCC, July 2000.
Prof. Mrs. Azuah has rich experience in teaching spanning over two decades at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Courses taught within this period include Advanced Apparel Design, Clothing Management, Fashion Merchandising, Research Methodology, Garment Technology, Pattern Technology, Proposal Development, and Millinery. She has supervised a number of Undergraduate and Master students including reviewing of PhD theses and promotion documents from local and international Universities.
Currently she is an External Examiner of Zimbabwe Technical University, KNUST, Koforidua Technical University, and Cape Coast Technical University. She also serves on the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, GTEC Panel of Assessors on accreditation of Fashion Design, Clothing and Textile programmes.
Prof. Mrs. Azuah has attended and presented papers in several national and international academic conferences and has a significant number of publications to her credit in journal articles, edited book chapters, refereed conference proceedings, course manuals and technical reports. Her research publications have appeared in peer-reviewed national and international journals published by Scopus, Springer, Google Scholar, etc.
Prof. Mrs. Azuah is a reviewer of some international journals such as, The Design Principles and Practice Journal Collection, Common Ground Research Networks of University of Illinois Research Park, Champaign II. USA, American Journal of Art, and Design (AJAD), Science Publishing Group, and Indirect Science Publishing.
She was the first academician to successfully research and develop a model for the popular beauty pageant, ‘Ghana’s Most Beautiful’ (GMB) telecast annually on TV3 as part of her PhD thesis. In her home town Navrongo, she contributed to the establishment of Miss Navrongo, a popular pageant being organised on the 26th of December every year. This pageant celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2022. Miss Wekia, the third runner-up of GMB 2018 was Miss Navrongo (2018) before competing nationally.
In 2022, Prof. Mrs. Azuah organized the first ever event of “Wear Ghana Fashion Competition” in the Western Region of Ghana for Senior High School Home Economics students under the auspices of the Centre for National Culture.
During her tenure as Head of Fashion Design and Technology Department in Takoradi Technical University, she promoted the Department and raised the celebration of “Technique Styles”, a fashion show programme to an enviable level that hosted other universities, the public, chiefs, and other prominent personalities in the country.
Through her dedication and influence in leadership, she has led her colleagues and many students who would have been drop-outs, to obtain higher degrees and still progressing greatly. Among these are now District and Metropolitan Directors, PhD holders, Heads of some TVET institutions, lecturers, and teachers in the education field and many others in the security services. Some of her mentees in the fashion field are now international fashion designers who exhibit their works worldwide. Among them are “Black ID”, “Chapter One” who organized the first ever fashion show for the blind at the Akropong School for the Blind.
As Head of Fashion Design and Technology Department of Takoradi Technical University, Prof. Mrs. Azuah led an overall operational management and facilitated the department’s vision and mission to its current level of repute. Her priorities include promoting excellence in teaching, learning, research, acquisition of skills, motivating colleagues and students to achieve significant goals/status. This is evidenced in the number and people she has successfully mentored. From the above, her administrative strength lies in her student-centric approach, innovative outlook, passion for holistic education and development of staff and students. Prof. Scholastica aims to develop St. Teresa College into an institution of national and global repute. Under her mentorship, graduates will emerge as future-ready professionals and responsible global citizens.
She is a member of the Association of Art Teachers of Ghana, Home Economics Researchers Association of Ghana and Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) and now, of Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education, PRINCOF.
Prof. Mrs. Azuah enjoys watching religious programmes and listening to gospel music. She is married to Ingr. Stephen Azuah of the Takoradi International Company located at the Takoradi Thermal Power Station, Aboadze and blessed with two children, Dr (Med.) Leonie W. Azuah and Joshua W. Azuah, an Electrical Engineer.
